FAQs

What is a whole-home water filtration system?

Exactly what it says on the tin—it’s a water filtration system that gives you better water throughout your whole home. Instead of fiddling around with individual tap filters or under-sink units in every room, just pop one of these units on your mains pipe outside your house so it can filter every drop of water that comes through.

Our systems use a combination of sediment filters, carbon blocks, and specialised filtration media to keep unwanted chemicals and contaminants like chlorine, lead, rust, and VOCs out of your water. High-quality systems (*cough* like Cloudtap *cough*) let you tailor your filters to your specific home and water, with different options for limescale, chloramine, heavy metals, rainwater tanks, and more.

Is Australian tap water safe to drink?

Yes, Australian tap water is safe and drinkable—but that’s a lower bar than you might expect. The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines make sure waterborne diseases are dealt with and contaminants are kept below dangerous levels, but they also allow for chlorine levels in drinking water higher than the recommended dosage for disinfecting a backyard swimming pool.

Australia is blessed with nearly universal access to drinkable water, and that’s absolutely not something to take for granted. Cloudtap systems aren’t just about making your water healthier; they’re about making life easier. Filtered water tastes, smells, and feels better, and the benefits flow on to your health, home, and bank account.

What does a whole-home water filter remove?

Depending on which filter cartridges you’re using, your whole-home system can remove a broad range of chemicals and impurities as small as 0.5 microns—that’s 140x smaller than the width of a human hair!

It’s difficult to provide a single comprehensive list for exactly what a water filter will pull out of your water because everyone’s home and water is different, but some of the more common impurities Cloudtap systems can help with include:

  • Chlorine
  • Copper
  • Iron
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Rust
  • Dirt
  • Sand
  • Chloramine
  • Algae
  • E. Coli
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Disinfection by-products (DBPs)
  • Trihalomethanes
  • PFAS (reduction only - reverse osmosis is required for full removal of forever chemicals)
  • Herbicides & Pesticides

Will filtered water help with skin conditions like eczema or dryness?

In a lot of cases, yes. Water filters aren’t medical devices and we can’t guarantee specific outcomes, but thousands of Australians have experienced significant improvements in skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis after filtering and softening their water.

Chlorine in your shower or bath water strips natural oils from your skin and hair, causing dehydration and exacerbating eczema symptoms. Chlorine itself can also be an irritant for people with sensitive skin, so filtering it out of your bathing water is a great way to look after your skin and hair.

How much does a whole-house water filter cost in Australia?

We know it’s frustrating when websites give you this answer instead of just saying an exact price, but it varies. Everyone’s home and water will be slightly different, so we can’t just give everyone an off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all solution (I mean, we could, but we’d rather give you something that actually works).

Very broadly speaking, Cloudtap systems start around $920, but they can be customised and configured all the way up to a premium $4595 unit for larger homes with tailored filter sets. We offer interest-free payment plans and BNPL options for every product in our range (including filter replacements).

If you’re not sure which configuration or price range you’d fall into, feel free to take the My Water Quiz or check out Filterpedia.

Do I need different filtration depending on where I live?

In some cases, yes. Australia is huge, and water conditions vary across the country. If you live in an area with hard water (most of WA/SA, some parts of QLD, many regional/rural towns), you’ll get more value out of our Scaleblock filter range. If your local water utility uses chloramine instead of chlorine (SA and parts of the eastern states), you’ll need a catalytic carbon filter rather than a standard coconut carbon set.

If you’re not sure about specific disinfectants in your water, a simple google search for “does [your postcode] have chloramine in tap water” should give you an answer either way. Water utilities often have online tools or report archives you can use to check the water quality in your specific suburb (SA Water even lets you check a detailed chemical breakdown of water at your specific address).

We can also help you figure out the best system and filters for your specific circumstances. If you still have questions after going through our Quiz and reading through Filterpedia (or our more detailed FAQs and blog—we love talking about water), feel free to send us an email, give us a call, or drop by our Osborne Park office for a chat.

How is a whole-home filter installed?

Whole-home systems are installed directly onto your property’s mains pipe, so the installation will need to be done by a licensed plumber. Unfortunately, this means that apartments and units without an independent water meter or mains connection aren’t compatible with standard Cloudtap systems, but we’re working on a solution specifically for those tighter setups - watch this space!

Ease of installation is one of the many ways Cloudtap sets itself apart from fiddlier systems. Our Design series systems come completely pre-assembled and pre-tested, pipes and all. The plumber simply has to mount the unit (free-standing or against a wall), connect the inlet and outlet pipes to the prepared hoses, flush the system for a few minutes, and you’re good to go.

The whole process is designed to be as easy for the plumber as possible—which means a faster, cheaper installation for you!

Is water filtration better for the environment than bottled water?

Absolutely, but that’s not exactly a high bar. Australia is one of the top-ranked consumers of bottled water (per capita) in the world, with the average Australian adult spending over $500 per year on bottled water. The bottles themselves are technically recyclable, but less than a third of plastic water bottles actually make it into the recycling system.

Getting bottled-quality water from every tap in your home lets you cut plastic bottles out of your life completely without sacrificing the chlorine-free taste. Filtering more than just your drinking water also multiplies your positive environmental impact; filtering and softening your water makes soaps, shampoos, detergents, and cleaning products work more efficiently, so you’ll go through containers more slowly and reduce chemical run-off from your home.

If you live in an area with hard water, reducing limescale can also be better for the environment. Keeping water-using appliances out of landfill for longer, helping your hot water system run more efficiently, and reducing your reliance on harsh cleaning chemicals is absolutely a net win for the planet.

Can I get a quote online, or do you have to send someone out to test my water?

We’re going to let you in on a secret here: there is absolutely no need to book an in-home consultation before finding out how much you might be spending on a water filter. We don’t send salespeople into your house to prove that chlorine exists, and we already have full access to your water quality through publicly available data.

In-home water tests can be a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your water or the filters you’re looking at, but the people coming in to answer those questions are often paid on commission, so their ultimate goal is to sell you something. Don’t get us wrong, we want to sell you something too, but we’d rather answer those questions upfront or organise a call so you can make a confident decision rather than forcing you down a high-pressure sales funnel.

Also, while you do get what you pay for when it comes to premium home improvements, an in-home consultant’s commission is often added to the price tag of the final product. Sales and marketing costs can artificially inflate the value of a filtration system without actually offering you more value. We cut out the middleman by being completely upfront with what we’re offering, working with you to figure out what you need, and giving you the best deal we can.
